Slackware Linux isn’t the most user-friendly distribution, but thanks to the effort of several independent projects, it has been turned into a more palatable operating system for novice users. One of them, Zenwalk Linux, has matured into a sophisticated distribution, complete with superb hardware detection, a graphical package configuration tool, and several setup utilities.
Zenwalk is focused on Internet applications and development tools. Zenwalk Linux aims to be focused on Internet application, multimedia and coding tools. Zenwalk is designed to be a rational system by providing only one application for a given task. The applications that provide the easiest and fastest way to perform the task are chosen. Zenwalk is quite polished and has a nice theme/artwork and is full-featured for being on an Xfce desktop and the ISO coming in at just over 500MB.
More information on this Linux distribution can be found at Zenwalk.org. Zenwalk is a Slackware-based distribution that uses the Xfce desktop environment and is light-weight but comes with a variety of useful desktop applications. Zenwalk Live 5.0 was released and it features LiveCD install support and capabilities for easily remastering your own Zenwalk LiveCD media.
Zenwalk is about a special touch to a mini-distro, not microscopic and amputated, but miniature and completely useful — and actually, surprisingly powerful. It is not possible for me to put a finger on just one or a few sides that makes this package what it is. Zenwalk is leaning towards the GTK toolkit API and provides its own gnome-libs packages (2.10.2), but runs both GTK and QT environments at will.
Installing and running KDE as your primary desktop is optional. Zenwalk is a multi-purpose Linux distribution focused on Internet applications, multimedia and programming tools. Additionally, Zenwalk comes with many specialized tools, designed for beginners through to advanced users as it offers system configuration via both graphical and command-line operations.
XFCE Itself is a superb desktop environment, complete with a control panel, themes, and a file manager. It is fully customisable and there are billions of plugins available to do anything you could think of to enhance your desktop. Xfce is the default desktop environment although Enlightenment is, of course, available in the repositories. There are several versions of Zenwalk available, including a LiveCD and a server version.
Zenwalk is packed with free/open-source goodies despite its limited size. It has a wide array of software applications for productive uses such as IceWeasel (Firefox Rebranded) web browser, GIMP image editor, Pidgin IM client, Brasero CD burner, Abiword and Gnumeric office programs, and plenty more. Zenwalk is possible because of the generosity of thousands of other developers. It’s pretty low to abuse that generosity, plus the generosity of all the upstream distributors who make all that code easily available.
