  Linux Eeebuntu

Eeebuntu is exactly what it sounds like - a distribution designed to support most of the Asus Eee PC family with little to no configuration on the user’s end. They also mention XEPC (SourceForge page) which is a project for an updated Xandros Linux distribution (that shipped with some of the Eee PCs), or rather to update the distribtion that came with those Eee PCs. Eeebuntu is at 8.10, not ubuntu-eee which is at 8.04 still.

Eeebuntu is pretty much Ubuntu-Eee’s cooler brother, I come to find out. So that in itself is a plus. Eeebuntu is a custom version of Ubuntu Linux that supports all drivers for most Eee PC models out of the box. Installing Eeebuntu 2.0 is just like any typical Ubuntu install. Once running, I had to select 160 x 120 resolution for the webcam to work (in the Cheese application) and to have the HDA Intel sound be Alsa for the microphone to work correctly. Installation is a breeze, and is done by booting from the flash drive. I used the installation option that uses the whole disk and doesn’t simply resize your EEE’s partition.

Netbooks were one of the hottest items at CES 2009. While the economy is tanking and many consumer electronics makers are seeing sales numbers fall, sales of these low cost portable computers continue to climb. Netbooks are small, ultra portable laptops (weighing in at about two pounds) that give you basic computing with long battery life (five to seven hours!). You can surf the web, send email, type a document, watch youtube videos, etc.
