  Asus Eee PC 1000H

The Asus Eee PC 1000H provides the power of a full-sized laptop in a compact body with an extra-large 10.2-inch screen, and is now powered by the latest Intel mobile processor. Designed specifically for mobile devices, the 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor uses a brand new design structure new hafnium-infused circuitry–which reduces electrical current leakage in transistors–to conserve energy, giving you more time away from the wall outlet.

The Asus EEE PC 1000H is the latest netbook launched by the Taiwan-based company after releasing the 701 last year and the 900 back in May. There are several notable improvements on the 1000H, such as the bigger 10″ display, a 6-cell battery, which Asus claims can last up to 8 hours, larger memory drive, Bluetooth; WiFi 802.11n and the Intel Atom processor. The Asus EEE PC 1000h sports the biggest screen yet, a 10-inch LCD running at 1024×600. As the review points out there are some interesting features on the 1000h to help take advantage of that big screen.

Netbooks are small, “so much ultra-portable”, fast, reliable and most importantly, very affordable (not all). When first generation netbooks came out, users have been satisfied of most of the features, but annoyances about the very limited disk space was heard from the majority. Intel’s Atom chip has been designed for use at low voltages, so you’ll find minimal fan activity – only when running multiple applications – and that the chassis remains cool to the touch, even after long periods of use. Intel eventually moved on to develop the Atom. In mid-2008, notebook manufacturers like MSI and Asus took the plunge and immediately deployed their first Atom-based netbooks.

Windows XP (ULCPC edition) ran very well so it was not necessary to install eeeBuntu, but the allure of dual-booting and a native Eee PC Linux distribution was just too strong. As it turns out, I have a lot of tinkering left to do on the Linux side and the installation somehow managed to corrupt my Windows installation so I’d say proceed with caution. Windows XP is the way to go, and the Asus Eee PC 1000H comes pre-installed with it.
